The Rev. Bertha Reels, founder of the Sarah’s Daughters Domestic Violence Awareness Foundation, will speak at the Jersey City Rotary Club’s meeting this Thursday, August 17 at Liberty Prime Steakhouse. The Foundation’s mission, according to a news article, “is to help those involved in violent relationships and remove the stigma so that people who have previous experiences with abuse can receive emotional healing as well.” A self-published author, the Rev. Dr. Reels earned her Master’s degree in Human Services from Lincoln University in Philadelphia and her doctorate in Christian Counseling from Andersonville Seminary. |

Interact Club at County Prep High School

Gerald M. Lyons, who was instrumental in the founding of the Interact Club at County Prep High School last year, will speak at the Jersey City Rotary Club’s meeting on Thursday, August 24 at Casino-in-the-Park. The school is one of several that comprise the Hudson County Schools of Technology (HCST). An educator for almost 30 years, Mr. Lyons serves both as the HCST’s Supervisor of Instruction and the Director of its Food Services Program. He was also named this summer as principal of the HCST’s KAS Prep Program (Knowledge and Advanced Skills) – an alternative learning program. A member of the Jersey City Board of Education since 2012, Mr. Lyons led students of County Prep High School in the founding of the school’s Interact Club, which was chartered on June 9, 2016 under the Jersey City Rotary Club’s sponsorship.

Kelly Soto, the founder of Soto Strategies Inc., I Deserve Wellness Movement, will speak at the Jersey City Rotary club’s meeting on Thursday evening at Liberty Prime Steak house. For 11 years, Ms. Soto worked at Prudential Finance, first as an Internal Regional Consultant beginning in 2005 and later as National Accounts Manager of Mutual Funds & Separate Accounts beginning in 2011. Before that, for a year beginning in 2004, she worked as National Accounts Manager for Alliance Bernstein, a global investment-management and research firm. Ms. Soto earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing & Management from Saint Peter’s University in 2001. Ms. Soto founded the Soto Strategies, Inc. – I Deserve Wellness Movement in May, 2014, while still working at Prudential Finance. |

Bill Lillis, a Coordinator of Parent Education at the Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey, will speak at the Jersey City Rotary Club’s meeting on Thursday afternoon at Casino-in-the-Park. While teaching at Saint Peter’s Preparatory College in Jersey City, Mr. Lillis, according to his biographical profile, coordinated the school’s programs on drug and alcohol abuse. He also served as moderator of the school’s SADD program. (Students Against Destructive Decisions) While working at the Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey, Mr. Lillis served as director of a program entitled Drugs Don’t Work in New Jersey, which provided technical support for companies in their efforts to establish drug-free work policies. |

Angela Davis is a Jersey City resident that joined HHS last week after spending nearly a decade from Just Food, a New York City based nonprofit organization, that empowers and supports community leaders in their efforts to increase access to locally grown food, especially in underserved New York City neighborhoods. She has also held positions with SEIU Local 32BJ, Community School for Social Justice, and the National Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship.
Angela is also of is a Holistic Health Coach, Certified Healing Foods Specialist, Certified Food Preserver.
She holds a Master's Degree in Education from The George Washington University and BA from Oberlin College.

Pradeep Wagh, the Immediate Past President of the Rotary Club of Pune Shivajinagar in India, will speak on Thursday evening of a joint Global Grant service project on which both the Rotary club in India and the Jersey City Rotary Club collaborated. An initial contribution of $5,000 from each of the two clubs formed the basis of a $40,000 Global Grant which allowed students in remote areas of India to receive a quality educa-tion through the use of audio-visual equipment. The Rotary Districts of both clubs – District 3131 in India and District 7490 in New Jersey - each contributed $6,500.

Dr. James R. Cole, an orthopedic surgeon and a member of the Englewood Rotary Club, will speak at the Jersey City Rotary Club’s afternoon meeting this week, at Rita & Joe’s Italian Restaurant.. Jim will speak on Rotary International’s 30-year effort to rid the world of polio, a campaign in which he himself has participated, administering an oral polio vaccine to children in 2013 in the west African nation of Togo. Jim began his 40-year career in orthopedic surgery at Col-Les Orthopedic Surgery in 1973, and in 1981, began a 31-year career of service at Englewood Orthopedics, having retired in March, 2013. In June, 2014, Jim received RI’s highest honor – the Service Above Self Award, which can be presented to no more that 150 Rotarians throughout the world in any one year, even though Rotary has more than 1.2-million members. |
